The typical cage for egg-laying hens allows floor space about the size of a sheet of printer paper. Such cages are stacked 3 to 9 tiers high. Japan has the world's highest battery cages stacked 18 tiers high, all in windowless sheds. Some chickens will become violent, others will go mad. A few deprived of food and hope will become cannibalistic. 97% of all eggs in the United States are from hens in battery cages with no way to roam outside. The doors of their cages will open once, at the end of their life, for their journey to the only place worse, processing.

Smashing Chicks

There are 2 types of chickens used for food. Broilers and layers - each with specific genetics. One type is fattened to eat and the other just lay eggs. So a good question to ask is, what happens to all the male offspring of the layers? If man hasn't designed them for meat, and nature clearly hasn't designed them to lay eggs, what function do they serve? None. Which is why all baby male layers are destroyed (250 million a year). How they are destroyed is gross so I won't get into it. They are not killed with a hammer. That is my creative license in visualising a point.

Birds Flock Together

How many birds can I fit on a page while drawing at the New Jersey shore? 18, plus 14 shells.

Cold Turkey

I LOVE stuffed turkey. The one in the Museum of Natural History of course. Not the kind that are stuffed with celery, breadcrumbs, and onions.

T Drawn By Rex

6 year old Rex Haluska did a pretty damn good drawing of me. He never broke a sweat.

Drawing The Met

I made a little trip to The Met recently to draw with friends. What I mostly do is try to stay invisible to the guards because you are not allowed to draw with a pen. Of course, as my drawing develops, Chinese tourists descend on me. They are my biggest fans. The problem is the ten person commotion attracts the guard's attention. I'm spotted with nowhere to hide. As the guard hovered, I think he gave me a pass because my skills were more than he anticipated. Next came the 8 Italian girls. They swooped in to hang out and look at my other drawing books. I kept hearing them say that I was "ASINO." Obviously, this had to mean genius because they said it over and over. All I could do was blush and tell them, yes it's true. Grazie, girls.

Newspaper Boxes

I hate those plastic newspaper boxes that are on street corners. They are usually full of useless pamphlets and magazines that you can take for free. Basically they are full of litter. The boxes themselves are litter. I drew these two wishing they would become obsolete. There is an old deli near me in Brooklyn I've wanted to draw, so I placed it next to the plastic eyesores to spruce them up. I'm toying with scale because I'm bored with the typical urban sketches.
